Cliff,

Thanks for the post.

I checked out the Flex 2.0 stuff on Macromedia's site this week, and data push seems to be coming to it in a new way (although there were no exact details on whether or not you still needed the FCS to make it happen).

In any event, I'm thrilled to see new features and further development for Flex and can't wait until the new version hits the streets.

- max

I worked with Flex for about six months when I was at Xerox and came out with mixed feelings. The UI controls are lovely and being able to do everything asynch is very nice. In my opinion however there was one critical feature missing: data push. Right now that's only currently available with Flash Com server which means coughing up more bucks on top of the already expensive Flex licenses. We needed to build a "real time" monitoring app and without data push the only option was to poll the server for updates frequently to make sure that what was showed in FlashPlayer was accurate. Unfortunately the more and more you poll the server the more you increase load and the better chance you have of bringing the app to its knees... especially when it has a projected user base of 30,000+ who might very well just leave the app open all day long and keep polling the server endlessly :)

However, I've heard that Flex 2.0 has some very very big things coming. I wasn't in web nirvana with Flex 1.5 but I hope I get a chance to work with the next version. I think it's going to be a quantum leap forward in the product and potentionally a big winner for Macromedia.

-Cliff
