Adobe’s Not F***ing Around

Adobe released a beta of Flash Player 10 today, taking a clear shot across the bow of Silverlight with features like built-in 3D, hardware acceleration, richer text support, and rich media features that are very interesting to me and my team at Highwinds for obvious reasons. I’m glad to see they are not sitting on their laurels waiting for Silverlight to cane Flex. Adobe has a significant headstart in the RIA space and it is releases like this that will keep them at the forefront.

One item I would love to see them work on more is Flex Builder. Having used FB3 day in and day out for a month now, it just doesn’t feel polished, but it has loads of promise. That being said, I have been totally spoiled by the bad-ass Java editing support in Eclipse, so I’m definitely biased. Even so, Visual Studio is widely regarded as one of the best IDEs on the planet, so if that’s the environment Silverlight developers will be working in, Adobe has their work cut out for them to make FB just as good. Let’s see what happens to the IDE when Flex 4 comes out (later this year, perhaps?).

I gotta tell ya man, I’m really excited about the new stuff coming out for Flex.

Working more closely with the .NET world, I’m starting to realize how much potential Silverlight really has as a platform. They’ve basically told their entire developer base, hey use these libraries (WPF and the sort) and write your Silverlight apps in whatever language you want. That’s a pretty small learning curve for most in the MS community next to ActionScript (even though ActionScript is stupid simple). I actually like the Silverlight 2.1 beta player more than Flash 9 based on the sample apps that I’ve seen (keeping in mind I use only Windows). The biggest thing for me however is that cross-platform side of things; if you’re not using Windows, forget about it. I’ve heard Mac integration is not good at all.

With Flash 10, Open Screen, and Flex 4 eventually, I think Adobe is gonna keep their foothold in the RIA space ahead of Silverlight. Not to mention how hard its gonna be to convince your designers to use MS Expression Studio/Blend/whatever its called.

Those are my random thoughts.

On the flip side, I wish Microsoft would make Visual Studio more accessible to other developer platforms. If they released the product on Linux and OS X they would have a killer offering.

Until then (if that ever remotely happens) we’ll be stuck in this idiotic dual-paradigm approach, much like JEE and .NET today on the server side.
