Hmm... interesting. I found a poll (end of article) on the web (you know how scientific they can be) and the opinion seems to be a 50/50 split on Flash vs. Silverlight.

I'm not feeling any need/desire to install the player just yet, so I will probably just spin the wheel on it after the next major release goes live.

- max

I had a terrible experience using Silverlight recently with Firefox 3 on Windows to, funny enough, via the Olympics. I had and issue where every time the Silverlight player would launch, Firefox would crash. Now I've grown accustom to Firefox crashing over time, but this was reproducable, so in the end I had to uninstall and re-install the plug-in. I'm using Windows and having issues, I can only imagine what Mac users are experiencing. I haven't tried Moonlight on my Ubuntu install yet, so maybe that will work better, but I agree with the author in the link, I'd rather watch TV.

BTW - Ben Forta linked to a great comparison of Silverlight and Flex this morning (http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/madgreek/the-battle-for-the-ria-throne-flex-vs-silverlight--26764). A pretty fair evaluation, but the comments by the MS rep are kinda funny.

as a user of the plugin on the olympics site, I find that I have to watch the video twice: I load the video, it's choppy as hell. i ignore it. i wait till the bar says it's completely buffered, then i go back and replay it to watch it how it should be. And this is on monster corporate pipe, not at home on dial up.

I can picture my dad trying to watch some olympic highlights with this thing. He wouldn't know enough to wait for it to be buffered. He'd just swear a lot and turn it off.

I definitely get the feeling, having used it several times, that it's not ready for prime time.
