Great post Max! Continuously learning new things is one of the most important things in this industry, more so than in most others. Not only that, but the pace of change is so fast (and getting faster), that one really does have to love this stuff in order to stay on top of things (or as on top of things as one can heh).

It's on Hacker News, too. I posted it there yesterday morning after seeing Sean's tweet. (I think the person who posted it to proggit probably saw it on Hacker News. That tends to happen.) There's some good discussion there, including my thoughts on #5.

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=648055

I managed to miss the feedback link until now. I thought comments were turned off, but I'm glad to see they're not! (Though I'm definitely pro-choice in the matter of allowing blog comments)

Great post.

I used to grossly compare good developers to doctors:
1. Both need to keep studding to keep up with their professions.
2. For both, the right diagnostic at the right time can be a life saver.
3. As soon as someone in the party knows your profession, they will comment about "this little pain that I have", expecting free advise.

But in any case, a good developer takes his profession as seriously as a doctor takes his.

Great post, Max. I like how well-balanced it is. It seems like most bloggers would simply say: "A college degree doesn't matter, the end," or "don't work in a non-tech company's IT department, period." It's cool that you can point out the merits of both approaches.

Also, this made it to the front page of reddit.

When things turn down, it's the people that don't know or play the politics that go first. Ability has nothing to do with it.
